Power outages and interruptions

Planned interruptions

To maintain and improve our equipment, we need to switch-off the power supply from time to time, so our people have safe access to poles and wires.

Unless it's an emergency, we'll give you at least four business days' written notice of the outage.

For information on current outages, call the 24-hour call centre on 132 004

Unplanned interruptions

Unfortunately, some power interruptions can't be avoided. They may be caused by:

  • storms
  • lightning strikes
  • falling trees or branches
  • birds or animals contacting power lines
  • motor vehicle accidents
  • equipment failure.

We aim to restore supply as soon as possible. You can help us find faults by letting us know if a specific power interruption is only affecting your property, or is more widespread.  If you have a power outage, please call the 24-hour call centre on 132 004

Life support customers

If you rely on medical equipment, make sure you have a back-up plan in case of unexpected power outages.

We recommend talking to your doctor or other medical providers about where to go in the event of an extended unplanned power failure.

How to plan for a power outage

  • Keep our 24-hour fault number 132 004 accessible (such as on your fridge or notice board, or save it as a contact in your mobile phone).

  • Use surge protection for electrical equipment, like TVs, DVD players and computers.

  • Prepare an emergency kit and keep it handy - including flashlights, spare batteries, first-aid supplies, bottled water, non-perishable items etc.

What to do during a power outage

  • Unplug electrical appliances to avoid short circuits when power is restored.
  • Don’t open your refrigerator and freezer if possible. Frozen food can last for 24 hours if the freezer door is left closed. Food in refrigerators can last up to 10 hours.

  • Use a generator with extreme caution. Use generators for power directly to appliances. Do not connect the output to the house switchboard or wiring. This can present a safety risk for our workers.

  • Leave one light switch on so you know when power is restored.

  • If you have a home security system, let your security company know about the interruption to make sure alarms operate correctly without power.
