Apprenticeships

On our four-year apprenticeship program, you’ll gain a trade and the opportunity for a career with us!

Our Electrical and Mechanical Apprentices work side-by-side with experienced tradespeople across Tassie on routine maintenance and on large-scale projects at our power stations! PLUS, all your TAFE course and tuition fees will be covered by us.

Trainee Maintenance Assistants

As a Trainee Maintenance Assistant, no two days are the same. Working with experienced teams, you’ll get out to inspect dams and canals – some of which were built close to 100 years ago!

You’ll also be providing technical support to help maintain unique hydropower machines that only a select group of people in the world get to work with.

“One of the things I value most about working at Hydro Tasmania is that we’re encouraged to be proactive in shaping our career paths and there’s a strong culture of trialling different roles to find the right fit. If you’re open and willing to put yourself out there, opportunities come your way. That openness has already taken me to some amazing sites across Tasmania.”

“Initially, my interest in the apprenticeship was sparked by a love for machine tools and fitting. But throughout the induction process, I began to understand just how dynamic and forward-looking the renewable energy industry is.

Hydro Tasmania goes above and beyond to involve the apprentices. Everyone has a voice, and the supportive management team makes a big difference in how empowered I feel to learn and contribute.”

“My biggest goal was not to work in an office. I wanted to be outdoors, in nature, doing hands-on work and not a 9 to 5 at a desk. With flexible hours and working in such amazing Tasmanian locations, I think I hit the jackpot.”

"Completing an apprenticeship with Hydro Tasmania provides the opportunity to learn and experience working on interesting equipment and projects, all while producing renewable energy. Trade based roles are a great career and fantastic foundation to move into other positions in the future."
